Nairobi, 26 March 2025 – H.E. Ambassador Boumediene Mahi of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria delivered a statement during the opening of the First Session of the UN-Habitat Executive Board, reaffirming Algeria’s steadfast support for the Programme’s mission to advance inclusive, sustainable, and resilient urban development globally.

Ambassador MAHI  reiterated its support for a transparent, inclusive approach in UN-Habitat's governance, particularly in relation to stakeholder engagement and the implementation of the 2026 Draft Work Programme and Budget. Hei emphasized the importance of ensuring geographical diversity and gender parity within the UN-Habitat workforce, calling for fair, merit-based recruitment that reflects the richness of global perspectives, particularly from underrepresented Member States in the Global South.

On the Strategic Plan 2026–2029, Algeria welcomed the consultative approach and stressed the need for the plan to be rooted in national and regional urban realities, aligning with local development priorities and avoiding divisive language to preserve consensus and broad ownership.

Algeria also highlighted the importance of balancing normative guidance with tangible operational results in the field, encouraging the Programme to continue enhancing its on-the-ground presence to better support Member States.

Addressing the critical situation in the Gaza Strip, Algeria expressed deep concern over the devastating urban destruction resulting from the ongoing war and underscored the urgent need for UN-Habitat to intensify its efforts to assess the damage and contribute to recovery and rebuilding efforts. He reaffirmed Algeria’s call for the Programme to mobilize all available resources in support of Palestinian people, underlining the importance of restoring dignity, resilience, and essential urban infrastructure.

In conclusion, Ambassador Mahi reaffirmed Algeria’s strong commitment to constructive engagement in the Executive Board’s deliberations and support for UN-Habitat’s overarching mission to promote equitable, sustainable urbanization that leaves no one behind.
