Biometric documents
1. Passport
As of November 24, 2015, all travelers must hold a biometric passport. Its validity is now ten (10) years for adults and five (5) years for minors.
The presence of minor children under the age of twelve is not mandatory, provided that the photographs submitted in their files are compliant. However, the consular post reserves the right to request their presence if verification is necessary.
From the age of 12, minor children must be accompanied by the father or the legal guardian.
The mother may request the issuance of passports for her minor children in the following cases:
- If the father is deceased (provide an extract of the death certificate or present the family record book bearing the marginal mention “deceased”);
- If the father is not of Algerian nationality (provide a copy of his identity document proving his nationality);
- If she is divorced and has custody of the child (provide a copy of the divorce judgment);
- If the father is absent (provide an authorization from the Legal Representative duly signed and legalized by a competent Algerian authority).
The file for a first application or renewal of a biometric passport includes the following documents:
- Consular registration card (valid, less than 5 years old): original + copy.
- Special form duly completed, dated, and signed, to be downloaded, plus an annex to be completed and signed by the applicant or legal guardian for minors.
- Birth certificate 12S (original + copy).
- Residence permit or foreign identity card (valid) for dual nationals (original + copy).
- Work certificate for applicants engaged in professional activity.
- Copy of a recent proof of residence (less than three (3) months).
- Two (02) recent digital passport photos meeting ICAO standards.
- Old passport (original + copy).
- For minors (under 19 years old): proof of schooling for the current year (school certificate or student card).
Payment of stamp duties is made upon submission of the file:
- 75 USD for adults;
- 37.5 USD for minors under 19 and students, upon mandatory presentation of a school certificate or student card for the current year.
Remarks:
- Married or divorced women whose status is not indicated on their 12S birth certificate must present a marriage certificate extract or a divorce judgment extract duly transcribed by Algerian services.
- The applicant’s blood group must be entered in the appropriate section of the form.
- Biometric passports are now individual; therefore, minor children can no longer be included in their parents’ passports.
Biometric Passport Collection Procedures
Biometric passports are produced in Algeria. Applicants are invited to check the website of the consulate where the application was submitted to confirm availability before coming to collect it.
For adults and children over 12 years old, presence is mandatory for fingerprint verification. For children under 12 years old at the time of application, presence is not required.
The biometric passport can be collected at the designated counter upon presentation of:
- Birth certificate “12S” (original), if returned during application;
- Application receipt;
- Old passport (valid or expired).
IMPORTANT
In accordance with Law No. 14-03 of February 24, 2014, relating to travel documents, the passport must be collected by its holder as soon as they are informed of its availability at the consulate.
Any passport not collected by its holder is destroyed six (06) months after notification of availability.
In this case, except in cases of force majeure, the stamp duty required for a new passport application will be double the fixed amount.
2. National Biometric Electronic Identity Card (CNIBE)
Registered nationals at a foreign consular post who hold a biometric passport may now apply for the National Biometric Electronic Identity Card. The process is carried out exclusively online, without submitting an administrative file or paying additional fees.
The application is made via the Ministry of Interior link:

Collection of the National Biometric Electronic Identity Card (CNIBE):

In case of loss or theft, a loss or theft declaration must be made at the consular post, upon presentation of a supporting document issued by the competent authorities of the place of loss or theft.
